Lakers vs. Bobcats, 2008

Lakers vs. Bobcats, 2008

A few years ago, a relative was visiting and said he might as well catch a Dodgers game while he was in town.  I was surprised, because it had never occurred to me that living in a big city carries with it the advantage of professional sports teams in residence. I’m not sure how I missed that – every other car, grown man, or child is festooned with Lakers purple and gold around here.  Maybe it’s because I’m more into college sports.  But thanks to that relative, now I have officially accepted professional sports as a Thing To Do in Los Angeles.

Now home to two NBA teams (the Lakers and Clippers), a WBNA team (the Sparks), and a hockey team (the Kings) as well as the Dodgers, Los Angeles has five times the opportunity to experience a professional game.  With baseball season running from April to September, and basketball and hockey seasons picking up the slack from October through April, you can catch a game any time of year.  Women’s basketball runs May through August, so you can even get basketball year round!  Depending on the game, the seats, and the team, it might cost a fortune to attend, but it will certainly be a highlight of any visit to LA for a serious sports fan.

The Lakers, Clippers, Sparks, and Kings all play at the giant entertainment complex, the Staples Center, in downtown Los Angeles.  More than just a sports arena, Staples Center has restaurants, nightclubs, bars, retail outlets, and a massive residential and hospitality complex across the street – L.A. Live  Traffic at game time can be brutal, so public transportation options which are advertised on the site, are worth looking into.

Even though all of these teams play at the same place, demand for tickets varies by team, game, and location of seats, so you can pay anywhere from $50 to $1200 for a Lakers ticket, $15 – $135 for the Kings, $15 – $300 for the Clippers, and $10 – $55 for the Sparks.  At any of these games, opting for the higher priced seats might find you sitting next to a celebrity, making the event even more worthy of a killer story once you get home.

Heading outside once again, you can spend a day in the sun at Dodger Stadium across town.  Located in Elysian Park, Dodger Stadium is still considered “downtown,” but faces similar traffic surges at game time, so it’s wise to check into public transportation options.  Tickets for Dodgers games range from $11 to $130.

No matter your budget, if seats are available you might take home a brush with sports greatness.  Just make sure you budget plenty of time for traffic and fighting the crowds.
